Artist Talk Alastair Clark will give an informal artists talk discussing the works in the exhibition. Focusing on sources of inspiration and methods used in making the works, the talk will last approximately 45 minutes. Inspired by an experience of witnessing the Northern lights, this exhibition explores the luminous energy of the Aurora through works in a variety of media from screenprints, digital prints, lightboxes and animation. The works, made after witnessing this phenomenon, are created as visualisations or reconstructions of the nature of the northern lights. As reconstructions, they employ different vantage points, representing the phenomena as though seen from both above and below. Observed as gestures of light flashing across the night sky, these works convey the luminous glow of the aurora using bright harmonies of monochromatic glowing colours and an unnatural perspective suggesting a transformed or heightened experience of the aurora. Alastair Clark trained in drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art, working with mixed-media and printmaking, where he became increasingly involved in printmaking. In 1995 he trained at the Tamarind Institute of Lithography, New Mexico. Since 1992 he has worked at Edinburgh printmakers Workshop, and is now Assistant Director. His position often involves working collaboratively with other artists, initiating projects and assisting each artist in the generation of their image. He also produces and prints their work as part of the Edinburgh Printmakers print publishing programme. Alastair Clark exhibits widely and is a professional member of The Society of Scottish Artists.
