About Edinburgh Printmakers

Established in 1967 as the first open access studio in Britain, Edinburgh Printmakers (EP) is dedicated to the promotion of contemporary printmaking practice.

It achieves this by providing, maintaining and staffing an entrance free gallery and inexpensive, open access print studio, where artists and members of the public can use equipment and source technical expertise in order to develop their hands on printmaking skills.

As a not for profit organisation that is also a registered charity, EP receives approximately 50% of it's funding through revenue and project funding from the Scottish Arts Council as well as support from the City of Edinburgh Council. This enables the organisation to highly subsidise the cost of using the print studio, making access to creative facilities affordable to a wide range of people. This includes professional artists, students, community groups and members of the public, who wish to develop new or existing skills.

Mission statement

Edinburgh Printmakers aims to promote the understanding of printmaking and pursue excellence in its practice by providing, maintaining and staffing an inexpensive open-access studio and free admission gallery.

Main programmes:

Open access studio facilities for artists >>

We are committed to providing high quality, low cost printmaking facilities for artists. Studio facilities are provided at reasonable cost for any artist who wishes to work in etching, lithography, screenprinting, relief printing, digital and darkroom. We also support applications from visiting artists and artists residencies.

How to join >>

Education programme >>

We run a programme of evening classes, weekend courses and master classes through the year. Our introductory courses provide the basic working skills and confidence to work in the studio. Master classes help develop further techniques and extend the range of processes used at EP. We also offer professional printmaking training to educators and art workers.

Co-publication programme >>

EP invites artists of national and International status to create print editions in the studio. Our research programme is focused on creating new and innovative work, which extends the profile of contemporary print practice.

We also offer a contract-edition printing service for artists and galleries. Contract printing service >

Gallery >>

EP gallery programme is dedicated to presenting the best of contemporary printmaking on a local, National and International level. The programme is formulated by the Exhibition committee, which meets approximately 4 times per year to select and curate exhibitions. These exhibitions reflect the aims and objectives outlined in the exhibition policy, which is available on request.

As well as promoting the highest quality exhibition programme, the gallery also holds a large stock of limited edition original prints which have been made on the premises by artist members and those who have taken part in the print co-publication programme. These works, all of which are for sale, represent the widest range of styles and subjects, ensuring that there is something to cater for all tastes. With prices ranging from as little as £30 up to £3000, there is also a wide range of work available to suit all pockets.

When a customer buys a print made at Edinburgh Printmakers, unlike commercial galleries, all monies from the sale go directly to the artist and / or the organisation. This means that EP can invest in the future sustainability of the organisation, ensuring that excellent facilities remain available to the widest possible range of users at the most affordable prices.

Funding

Edinburgh Printmakers receives financial support from the Scottish Arts Council (SAC) and City of Edinburgh District Council. This accounts for approximately 50% of our running costs. The remaining costs are covered by Income generated through print sales, publishing and printing.
