Another Time Another Place is an exhibition of prints by Martin Aitchison, one of the principal artists for the children’s Ladybird series of learn-to-read books in the 1960s and early 1970s. These prints are accompanied by some of the original gouache and watercolour paintings made for these books by Aitchison and John Berry, another of the Ladybird illustrators. These books were conceived by writer and teacher William Murray as a tool for the promotion of literacy. A note to teachers and parents spelt out their purpose: “The full-colour illustrations have been designed to create a desirable attitude towards learning – by making every child eager to read each title. Thus, this attractive reading scheme embraces not only the latest findings in word frequency, but also the natural interests and activities of happy children”. Edward Summerton -
The Rural See prints > Pricelist (PDF) > Events > An exciting opportunity to see, exhibited for the first time, three new screenprints by Edward Summerton, commissioned and published by Edinburgh Printmakers, these prints will be shown alongside his recent gouache paintings. Summerton’s fascination with the representation of nature through book illustrations, field recordings, and dioramas have influenced his most recent works including this exhibition The Rural. His imagery is rooted in the illustrations culled from the natural history and fairy tale editions of the Ladybird series books from the 1960s and 70s. His gouache paintings, described as book interventions, flirt with the illustrations by way of mysterious, almost invisible detail, and are imbued with an idiosyncratic humour. The images slip in and out of recognition and illuminate a decaying romanticism that connects European folk tales to contemporary hallucinogenic experiences. Edward Summerton was born in Dundee in 1962. He graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee in 1985. He works as a lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Dundee and has exhibited nationally and internationally for the past 20 years. He has organised and curated events and exhibitions and has work in private and public collections including the Royal Scottish Academy, the BBC and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Through A Child’s Eye See prints > Pricelist (PDF) > Edinburgh Printmakers’ presents an exhibition of works by seven artists who were invited to take part, seeing the world Through A Child’s Eye. The result is an exhibition brimming with childlike flights of fancy, populated with stories, characters and childhood memories. United by a common theme each artist has taken a very individual approach to the exhibition. In Robert Crozier’s linocut ‘Tales’ we see a cohort of fictional characters that formed a strong impression on the artist as a young child. In this print Gulliver meets the Pied Piper, and an army of Tolkein’s Orcs jostle at the feet of the wooden horse of Troy. Conversely Alice Melvin has used the book format to create her screenprinted ‘A-Z Treasure Hunt’. The book concertinas out of a cover that is a treasure chest, the reader must find a specific object for each page and letter of the alphabet to complete the book. Engaging and inspiring Through A Child’s Eye is an exhibition to delight the young and old alike.
