2004 Edinburgh Printmaker’s is proud to present a new portfolio of twelve prints by Magne Furuholmen. Magne is known worldwide as writer and keyboard player with seminal group AhA. The Norwegian group launched onto the pop scene in the 1980’s, instantly making their mark on the music charts. Following their overwhelmingly successful pop career, with number one hits around the globe, AhA retired from the limelight in the nineties to pursue individual projects. Magne has since launched his own solo music career and has established himself internationally as an accomplished printmaker and ceramicist, with works in private and public collections throughout the world. This is the first opportunity in Scotland to see Magne’s stunning portfolio of prints entitled Payne’s Gray (Drawing From Memory). The prints are accompanied by a 12” vinyl remix of his new album, Past Perfect, Future Tense, which was released in September of this year. Both elements of the exhibition share a common methodology, with the notion of cutting and pasting music to reconfigure a single new piece, running parallel to the practice Magne used in creating his prints. Each print sees hand-written lyrics taken from the album and used as a visual tool, helping to construct the images’ composition. Magne worked directly onto the plate, often vigorously scratching on the words. His use of various strengths of incision mean certain words and phrases are visually emphasised, just as we would aurally experience variation in tone when listening to the accompanying music. Expressive mark making and amorphous shapes are also incorporated into Magne’s prints. These either dwarf or accentuate the text, hiding and revealing certain words to give the images visual depth. Magne’s album and 12" remix features appearances from amongst others Ed Harcourt, Guy Berryman, Will Champion of Coldplay, and Andy Dunlop from Travis. Having spent time amassing this collection of songs, Magne has derived much satisfaction from dealing with them visually. Payne’s Gray (Drawing From Memory) is an exhibition that visually communicates the beautiful and melancholic Scandinavian song craft, providing a treat for eyes and ears alike. Opening event There is a unique opportunity to hear Magne's 12" remix during the exhibition preview at Edinburgh Printmakers on Saturday 6 November, 2 - 4 pm. For further information

Paynter Edinburgh Printmakers is proud to present a suite of 14 prints from one of Britain’s leading wood engravers, Hilary Paynter. From the Rivers to the Sea is a pictorial journey around the Northeast of England: a journey full of detail and texture. Hilary Paynter’s exciting new work, From the Rivers to the Sea was originally commissioned by Nexus Art on Transport to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Thomas Bewick. Bewick was born in Tyneside, a renowned artist whose wood engraving has had a lasting influence upon artists such as Paynter. Chair of the Society of Wood Engravers Paynter has done much to revive interest in wood engraving and is a leading and prolific practitioner in her field. Inspired by the scenery of the northeast Paynter made many journeys on Tyneside’s Metro transport system. From the outset Paynter was ‘arrested by the idea of the Metro as a journey in and out of the past and the richness of historical context’, whilst simultaneously aiming to show ‘the contemporary scene and how the past is embedded within it’. The result has been fourteen stunning prints that together present a panoramic journey through the Northeast of England. The delicate craftsmanship of Paynter’s wood engraving has produced prints that are filled with intimate detail and a multiplicity of textures. As part of her commission Paynter has given this time-honoured printing technique a contemporary setting. On Newcastle Central station From Rivers to the Sea can be seen as a mural stretching over 22 meters long. Each image has been enlarged from 200mm to 2m before being screen-printed onto vitreous enamel panels. For the thousands of Metro passengers, the resulting work is providing a new and engaging interpretation of the scenery with which many of them are so familiar. With From Rivers to the Sea, Paynter has achieved a fitting tribute to the work of Bewick, whilst creating a stunning travelogue imbued with her own unique style.
