See prints >> Edinburgh Printmakers is proud to present an exhibition of etchings of wild romantic landscapes from the Celtic islands of Scotland and Ireland by Norman Ackroyd, one of Britain’s most famous contemporary printmakers. Ackroyd has liberated etching from the processes of the studio and set it directly before the subject...A miror propped up to rectify the image in anticipation of the print, brush and feather and a little acid to work directly on the plate, a little water to stop the bite, and off we go. Ackroyd...who is to etching what Turner was for watercolour...is a remarkable artist, unconfined by the ostensible category and technical limitations of his principal medium, an artist who makes etchings, an etcher who paints. William Packer Norman Ackroyd was elected a Royal Academician in 1991 and was made Senior Fellow at the Royal College of Art in 2000, he now lives and works in London. Stewart See prints >> The historical treatise by Nicholas Copernicus, in which he established that the Sun, not the Earth, was the centre of planetary motion, provides the inspiration for this exhibition by Canadian artist, Catherine Stewart. Here she presents an unusual suite of multiple plate etchings - photographic images of a moving figure, overlaid with pages from the manuscript Opus Revolutionibus Caelestibus by Copernicus. In these prints, the human form is visually linked to the eternal forces of nature. The transition from childhood
to adulthood can be likened to a Copernican paradigm shift. During this
phase of intellectual development, a child's view of reality changes from
one centred on self, family and immediate surroundings to one which encompasses
much, much more. Furthermore, as an adolescent's view of the universe
expands, an awareness of his or her place in it changes as well. This
gradual change in perspective can be seen to parallel the shift in Western
consciousness that occurred when Copernicus established that the sun,
not the earth, was the centre of planetary motion. Events Catherine Stewart - Copernican
