Artist:
Nicola Murray I am interested in the relationship between art and science. Public perception of science and scientists appears to fluctuate between extremes of suspicion and blind faith. The ‘white-coat’ might be seen as visual shorthand for scientific authority and time-tested expertise, but it can also be perceived as a symbol of something more sinister. The term ‘mad-scientist’ evokes fictional characters like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. My lithograph plays with these opposing perceptions. Scientific knowledge of the world is constantly on the increase, with rapid developments in our tools of investigation. Ethical and philosophical questions abound as we begin to understand the fundamental mechanisms of life itself. Faced with a continued scientific unravelling of nature I hope that there will always be things that can’t be explained. A gap in our knowledge leaves room for poetry and a sense of wonder that we exist at all. C.V. Education Solo
