When Edinburgh Printmakers invited me to take part in the Lithography Portfolio I was about to leave the country and go back to Germany.

In the last few years my work dealt with the question of identity/origin and belonging and I tried to express it in what I called ‘landscape-paintings’. The memories of my childhood are vague and unclear, corrupted by photographs and ‘family stories’ at Christmas time. I mainly see myself playing in a forest. The darkness within this place and the fact that I couldn’t tell a single complete story about this boy who’s carrying my name makes the colour black a vital element in my work. I use many layers of thin oil paint, drowned in linseed oil, which I apply over a long period of time according to the many, inaccurate pictures I get when I try to think back. For the same reason, putting many ‘images’ together to get a whole, I often work in series, like the tryptich I [intend to] am showing with this lithography.

‘A long goodbye’ is similarly dealing with memories of feelings and experiences I made in Scotland but it’s more recent and less vague.
I used the technical possibilities of lithography to print one image on top of the other, with the first layer still visible but almost fading away. Many things happened to me between arriving and leaving Scotland and I wanted the final layers of that print to be fresh and friendly to give it a positive impression [, in a way, it’s a love declaration to my friends.
