Evening and weekend classes Edinburgh Printmakers are proud to offer a wide range of introductory and advanced printmaking classes. Our popular in-depth weekend and evening classes offer practical training in small groups, led by experienced tutors with time for experimentation within each process. With all our weekend and evening classes you get a free associate membership of Edinburgh Printmakers for 3 months so you can come back to EP to put into practice the skills learnt on the course. Edinburgh Printmakers also offers 1-1 training and can create tailor made classes to suit your training needs. Don’t know which class to choose? Try a few of our shorter taster classes, designed to introduce you to new media and explore the wide range of printmaking possibilities. Explore Etching: Acrylic Resist Etching introduces participants to a variety of techniques that replace traditional methods & materials used in etching with much safer water-based products & less hazardous chemicals. The courses are ideal for artists, particularly those with skills in drawing and painting, who wish to work directly onto metal plates, developing their images through various hand applied techniques. Photopolymer & Solarplate courses use revolutionary intaglio techniques that don’t require the plate to be etched with acids or corrosives. The methods are therefore extremely safe, fast and produce images with astonishing detail and rich tonality. Solarplate is capable of producing large numbers of high quality prints with a wide tonal range and high definition. As a modern alternative to the technique of photogravure, “solarplate” will appeal to artists using photographic imagery and who wish to explore print techniques. Photo-etching courses provide instruction in how to etch plates using photopolymer film. Images created digitally or photographically (as well as hand drawn images) can be etched into metal plates using ferric chloride, a much safer alternative to the traditional acids used previously. Etching Classes: Introduction to Etching Introduction to Etching Evening class The course promotes an experimental approach to etching, using innovative techniques that encourage spontaneous and diverse methods of mark-making. Using water-based acrylic resists makes etching a much safer process, using neither dangerous acids nor solvents. Printing techniques will be demonstrated, including water-washable etching inks. Photopolymer & Solarplate Produce truly stunning results with light sensitive plates: fast, safe and simple. Photopolymer printmaking is a revolutionary etching process as plates no longer need to be bitten in acid and images can be created from a wide variety of sources, from hand-drawn artwork or using photographic and digital techniques. This weekend course will explore a number of alternative "non-etch" intaglio processes, introducing both photopolymer film and Solarplate techniques. Solarplate or photopolymer gravure uses remarkable water-washable photopolymer plates, producing results similar to 19th century process of photogravure, “Solarplate” is an innovative new printmaking process that is safe and fast. Although the course will be of interest to all artists, it is particularly suitable for those working with photographic and digital imaging who wish to produce high quality original prints. Photo-Etching An introduction to the latest techniques in photo etching – the light sensitive acid resists allow photographic and digital images to be etched onto the plate. We shall explore two different photo-etching methods, using photosensitive film & liquid photopolymer. Ideally suited for those with some knowledge of etching, the course will encourage an experimental approach to producing etchings using a variety of source material. < top
Screenprinting classes: Introduction to water based screenprinting This course concentrates on using light sensitive stencil screenprinting. This type of stencil can produce detailed marks such as painterly washes, linear drawings, photocopied images and text. Participants learn how to print their image in several coloured layers onto paper. To print, the screen is attached to a printing press and acrylic based ink is pushed through the screen mesh onto paper using a squeegee blade. Each layer of colour is printed individually, taking care to register each new layer of ink on top of previously printed colours. This course uses waterbased inks on paper which are not suitable for printing on textiles. < top
Lithography classes: Colour plate lithography Have all the painterly freedom and subtlety of a lithograph without grinding stones and with the minimum of processing. Explore layering images in colour to create painterly prints with a delicacy of mark and tone, characteristic to this medium. This course concentrates on using light sensitive aluminium photo plates. These plates can produce detailed marks such as painterly washes, linear drawings, photocopied images, photographs, digital images and text. Participants learn how to print their image in several coloured layers onto paper. Each layer of colour is printed individually, taking care to register each new layer of ink on top of previously printed colours. (No previous experience required) Stone Lithography Working directly on the stones’ surface allows a direct approach to making marks and images. Explore drawing and transfer techniques including crayon, tusche washes, and photocopy transfers. Find out how to prepare stones for printing and experiment with this fascinating medium. Digital imaging and Photo Lithography Combine digital imaging with printmaking. Learn to prepare images in Adobe Photoshop and print out acetates for a printmaking process. Expose images onto light sensitive photo litho plates and print in transparent and opaque colours, exploring the subtle layering of colour lithography. Relief printing classes: Introduction to Relief printing Explore ways of creating striking images with this simple yet powerful print medium process. Cutting images into wood or linoleum and inking up with colour can produce bold dramatic effects. This course will explore the diverse range of ways which artists use this direct process, looking at the practicalities of reduction printing and multiple block printing. Japanese Water-Based Woodblock printing These workshops offer a rare insight into one of the most ancient and subtle print processes . Established artist Paul Furneaux, who studied in Japan and is well known for his evocative imagery and sumptuous colour harmonies, will explain this fascinating medium through demonstrations of printing and cutting techniques. Following that there will be ample opportunity to explore the medium, cutting blocks and printing in layers of colour. Other classes: Introduction to Printmaking Introduction to Printmaking Have you always wanted to make prints but don’t know how to start? This course is for you: low tech and hands on you will get a sense of what it is like to make some prints using a variety of printmaking methods. Book Binding Create beautiful books in this inspiring weekend workshop. Learn how to fold and stitch your own hardback book, create a mini concertina, and turn your old greetings cards into colourful sketchbooks. You will leave this stimulating workshop with your arms full of books and your head full of ideas!
